Born and raised in New York City, Bert Monroy worked as an art director and creative director for various agencies for twenty years. His digital art career began in 1984 when the Macintosh 128K computer came out and he is considered a digital art pioneer.
His work has been publicized all over the computer art industry and has been featured in books on computer and digital art. Monroy also co-authored several books on Photoshop including the first book on Photoshop called The Official Adobe Photoshop Handbook. He also authored his own Bert Monroy: Photorealistic Techniques with Photoshop and Illustrator and Photoshop Studio with Bert Monroy. He has done commercial work like ads, product ads, covers, posters, and web and interactive designs. In 2004, Bert Monroy was inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame.
Bert Monroy is a digital photo-realist artist. His work literally looks like it was picture taken. As a video gamer, I am always amazed at the stunning environments of the games. I am always intrigued how real it looks. One of my favorite video game franchises of all time is Grand Theft Auto. As every new GTA game kept coming out the surrounding environments kept looking more realistic. Recently, Grand Theft Auto IV just blew me away with it realistic environments of the game’s city called Liberty City. I still play GTA IV til this day and many times I simply just stare at how detailed everything looks. From the streets to the houses, aleeyways, buildings, and vehicles, it’s truly amazing to see. Because of that, I can see Bert Monroy’s work influencing me and what I hope to do because much of his work is so similar to the graphics done in Grand Theft Auto IV and that’s what I’ve always been attracted to.
